A hospital's online appointment-booking service must stay usable for patients even if a single server or a single data centre has a problem. Which cloud concept describes this goal?
Choose one answer.
- AA. High availability
- BB. Elasticity
- CC. Economies of scale
- DD. Agility
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: A
- A. Right: Correct. High availability means a system keeps working with minimal downtime when individual components fail, for example by running across several Availability Zones.
- B. Wrong: Elasticity is about adding and removing capacity automatically as demand changes. It does not on its own keep a service running when a data centre fails.
- C. Wrong: Economies of scale explain why AWS can offer lower prices. They say nothing about keeping a service running through failures.
- D. Wrong: Agility is about how quickly teams can get resources and try new ideas, not about surviving the failure of a server or data centre.
Explanation
High availability is the ability of a workload to keep serving users with minimal interruption when parts of it fail. On AWS this is usually achieved by spreading resources across multiple Availability Zones, each of which is made of one or more separate data centres, so the loss of one location does not take the service down.
