An Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling group is set with a minimum capacity of 2, a desired capacity of 4 and a maximum capacity of 10. Overnight, traffic drops almost to zero. What is the smallest number of instances the group will run?
Choose one answer.
- AA. 0, because Auto Scaling removes all instances when there is no traffic
- BB. 2, because the group never goes below its minimum capacity
- CC. 4, because the group always keeps its original desired capacity
- DD. 10, because Auto Scaling keeps the maximum ready for sudden peaks
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: B
- A. Wrong: Scaling policies cannot reduce the desired capacity below the minimum, so the group will not go to zero.
- B. Right: Correct. The minimum capacity is the floor. Scaling policies cannot decrease the group below it.
- C. Wrong: Desired capacity changes as scaling policies act. It can fall as far as the minimum.
- D. Wrong: The maximum is the ceiling the group can scale up to, not the number of instances it keeps running.
Explanation
An Auto Scaling group has three settings. Minimum capacity is the lowest number of instances the group will run, maximum capacity is the highest, and desired capacity is the number the group tries to maintain at any moment. Scaling policies move the desired capacity up and down but always within the minimum and maximum.
