A company's application depends on a specific database engine version that Amazon RDS does not offer. The database also needs custom software installed on its operating system. Which option meets these requirements?
Choose one answer.
- AA. Amazon RDS, using the closest available engine version
- BB. Amazon Aurora, because it supports every database engine
- CC. Amazon DynamoDB, because it removes the need for a database server
- DD. Install and manage the database on Amazon EC2 instances
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: D
- A. Wrong: A different version does not meet the requirement, and standard Amazon RDS does not let you install your own software on the database host.
- B. Wrong: Aurora is MySQL- and PostgreSQL-compatible. It does not run arbitrary engines or allow custom software on the host.
- C. Wrong: DynamoDB is a NoSQL key-value and document database. It cannot run a relational engine the application depends on.
- D. Right: Correct. Running the database on EC2 gives full control of the operating system and engine version, at the cost of managing patching and backups yourself.
Explanation
Managed databases such as Amazon RDS remove work like patching and backups, but they offer specific engines and versions and manage the host for you, so you cannot install your own software on it. When an application needs an unsupported version or custom software on the database host, a self-managed database on EC2 is the option, with the customer taking on the operational tasks.
