A company must be certain that it can launch a set number of Amazon EC2 instances of a specific type in one Availability Zone during a planned two-week event. It does not want a one-year or three-year commitment. Which option should it use?

Choose one answer.

  1. A. On-Demand Capacity Reservations in that zone
  2. B. Spot Instances in that Availability Zone
  3. C. Compute Savings Plans for the event
  4. D. Regional Reserved Instances for the Region
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A

  • A. Right: Correct. Capacity Reservations reserve capacity in a specific Availability Zone for any duration, and immediate-use reservations have no term commitment.
  • B. Wrong: Spot Instances can be interrupted when EC2 needs the capacity back, so they cannot guarantee capacity.
  • C. Wrong: Savings Plans give a discount for a one- or three-year spend commitment. They do not reserve capacity.
  • D. Wrong: Regional Reserved Instances need a one- or three-year term and give a billing discount without reserving capacity in a specific Availability Zone.

Explanation

On-Demand Capacity Reservations guarantee EC2 capacity in a specific Availability Zone for as long as you need, and immediate-use reservations can be cancelled at any time. They give no discount by themselves, but can be combined with Savings Plans or Regional Reserved Instances for one. Commitment-based options such as Savings Plans lower the price but do not reserve capacity.
