CLF-C02 practice question: Storage and data transfer pricing
Billing, Pricing, and Support A free question from our original CLF-C02 practice exam. Try it, then open the answer to see why each option is right or wrong.
A company copies large amounts of data from an application in the eu-west-2 Region to a backup in the us-east-1 Region. How is this inter-Region data transfer charged?
Choose one answer.
- AA. Both Regions charge for the data, once as it leaves and again as it arrives.
- BB. Data out of the source Region is charged; data into the destination Region is free.
- CC. Transfers between AWS Regions are always free because the data stays on the AWS network.
- DD. Only the destination Region charges, because it stores the new copy of the data.
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: B
- A. Wrong: AWS does not charge for data transferred into the destination Region, so the transfer is not charged twice.
- B. Right: Correct. Inter-Region transfer is charged on data out of the source Region; data into the destination Region is free.
- C. Wrong: Data transferred out of a Region to another Region is a charged item, even though it stays within AWS.
- D. Wrong: Storage of the copy is billed separately. Data transfer is charged on the way out of the source Region, not on arrival.
Explanation
Data transfer pricing follows a simple pattern. Data coming into AWS from the internet is not charged. Data going out to the internet is charged (after a free allowance), and data moving between Regions is charged on the transfer out of the source Region, with no charge into the destination Region. Keeping data in one Region where possible avoids these charges.
