A bank wants one assistant that can handle mortgage questions, card disputes and general account queries. Each area has different tools and rules. The architects want each area handled by a specialist, with one component deciding which specialist should take each request and combining the results. Which design pattern is this?
Choose one answer.
- AA. A single agent with a very long system prompt covering every area
- BB. A supervisor agent that routes tasks to specialist collaborator agents
- CC. A batch inference job that processes all requests overnight
- DD. A fine-tuned model trained separately on each area's documents
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: B
- A. Wrong: One agent with every tool and rule is harder to maintain and more likely to pick the wrong tool, which is what the architects want to avoid.
- B. Right: Correct. In a hierarchical multi-agent system, a supervisor plans the work and delegates parts to domain specialist agents.
- C. Wrong: Batch inference processes prompts asynchronously in bulk. It does not route live requests to specialists.
- D. Wrong: Fine-tuning changes model weights. It does not provide a component that delegates requests between specialists.
Explanation
Multi-agent systems split complex work across agents. In the supervisor (hierarchical) pattern, a higher-level agent breaks down the request and routes each part to a specialist agent with its own instructions and tools, then combines the results. This keeps each agent focused and easier to test.
