A company must leave its data centre within three months because the lease is ending. It plans to move its application servers to Amazon EC2 exactly as they are, with no code or architecture changes, and to optimise them later. Which migration strategy is this?

Choose one answer.

  1. A. Refactor
  2. B. Replatform
  3. C. Rehost
  4. D. Repurchase
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: C

  • A. Wrong: Refactoring changes the application's architecture to use cloud-native features. It is the most complex strategy and does not fit a quick move without changes.
  • B. Wrong: Replatforming adds some optimisation during the move, such as moving a database to a managed service. The company is making no changes.
  • C. Right: Correct. Rehosting, also called lift and shift, moves applications to AWS without changing them.
  • D. Wrong: Repurchasing replaces the application with a different product, such as a SaaS offering. The company is keeping its own application.

Explanation

Rehost (lift and shift) moves applications to the cloud unchanged. It is often chosen when time is short, for example when a data centre exit date is fixed, because it needs no redesign. Teams can then optimise the workloads once they are running on AWS.
