While assessing its applications for migration, a company finds an internal reporting tool that nobody has used for months and whose servers average under 5% CPU use. The business confirms the tool has no value. Which migration strategy should the company apply to it?
Choose one answer.
- AA. Retain
- BB. Relocate
- CC. Rehost
- DD. Retire
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: D
- A. Wrong: Retain keeps an application in the source environment, for example because it is not ready to move. Keeping a tool with no value would continue to cost money.
- B. Wrong: Relocate moves many servers to a cloud version of the same platform. There is no reason to move a tool that nobody needs.
- C. Wrong: Rehosting would move the unused tool to AWS unchanged, so the company would keep paying to run something with no business value.
- D. Right: Correct. Retire means decommissioning or archiving an application and shutting down its servers, which suits applications with no business value.
Explanation
The 7 Rs are retire, retain, rehost, relocate, repurchase, replatform and refactor. Retire is used for applications that can be switched off, such as those with no business value or 'zombie' applications with very low CPU and memory use. Retiring them before a migration reduces both the work and the ongoing cost.
