Cloud Technology and Services A free question from our original CLF-C02 practice exam. Try it, then open the answer to see why each option is right or wrong.

A data-processing application on Amazon EC2 needs very fast temporary storage for intermediate files. The files can be recreated if they are lost, and the company does not want to pay separately for this storage. Which option fits best?

Choose one answer.

  1. A. An Amazon EBS volume attached to the instance
  2. B. An Amazon EFS file system
  3. C. The instance store volumes that come with the instance type
  4. D. An Amazon S3 bucket in the same Region
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: C

  • A. Wrong: EBS volumes persist independently of the instance, but they are billed separately, which the company wants to avoid for throwaway files.
  • B. Wrong: EFS is shared, persistent network file storage and is billed for the data stored. It is more than temporary scratch data needs.
  • C. Right: Correct. Instance store is temporary block storage on disks attached to the host, included in the instance price and suited to scratch data.
  • D. Wrong: S3 is durable object storage reached over the network. It is not designed as fast local scratch space and is billed for storage and requests.

Explanation

Instance store provides temporary block-level storage on disks physically attached to the host. It costs nothing extra and suits buffers, caches and scratch data. Its data survives a reboot but is lost when the instance is stopped, hibernated or terminated, so anything that must persist belongs on Amazon EBS or another durable service.
